Solarplate Etching (2-day workshop)
Make beautifully detailed etchings without using harmful chemicals! Solarplates are light-sensitized steel plates that are a simple, safe and fast alternative to traditional etchings with acids and solvents. Using a light box and soy based inks students will explore making using painterly styles and photographic transparencies. Basic printmaking lessons in tearing paper, registering paper, mixing colors, and using the press will be covered.  All materials in this class are non-toxic. Supplies included. Each class in this series on composition starts at the Museum with brief instructions on an individual rule of composition. Having seen examples in the classroom, we venture outside to make images using this rule of composition, sometimes going as far as Alapocas Woods State Park. Returning to the Museum, photographers will share their images and discuss. The class is open to photographers of all experience levels, using any kind of camera including smart phones. With the Museum’s beautiful Chihuly Bridge overhead, Pyxis turns to music that spans time and geography and links composers to their homeland. Joaquín Turina’s Piano Trio is filled with the fire of Spain, and Zoltán Kodály’s Intermezzo draws on his beloved Hungarian folk tunes. The evening’s major work is Dvořák’s justly famous and masterful Piano Quartet in E-Flat Major. At 7:30 p.m., a Museum curator will present a 15-minute pre-concert talk. In this workshop, students will build a simple box with a cradle-hinged lid and secure catch.  The class will focus on the start-to-finish fabrication of a tight, sturdy, 5-knuckle cradle hinge – a task which requires precise measuring, cutting, and soldering.  This class is a great way to level-up fabrication skills, and the hinge-making principles introduced can be applied to many other formats, including bracelets, necklaces, and more.
