Connected: Beauty is... Reception & Exhibition

Using the camera as a tool for creative expression, Stay Focused puts the student in control of the narrative, challenging them to view the spaces around them in new ways in order to share perspectives that are important to them. Founded and facilitated by photographer Shannon Woodloe, Stay Focused covers the history and core elements of photography, culminating in a theme-based photography project.

The project, “Beauty is…,” will be the students’ photographic responses to the marketing billboard for the Museum’s exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, which poses the questions, “What is beauty?”

A reception and exhibit of student works will be held December 12, 2019 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

This Connected Series program is being offered in partnership with Serviam Girl’s Academy and Children and Families First’s Community Schools program at Bancroft Elementary School.

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service 2020

Martin Luther King, Jr., Day of Service 2020

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through art and service in partnership with One Village Alliance and Raising Kings.

Portrait Photography
Monday, January 20 | 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

During the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, add your portrait to a wall of photographs of our community. To complement the exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, we are filling a wall of our entryway with portraits of our community members. 100 frames will slowly fill with photographs of locals, to add dimension to the portraits in the special exhibition itself. We’d love to include your  portrait. Register to have your photograph taken by Joe McFetridge on  January 20. Participants will receive a digital and print copy once the photographs come off the walls in spring 2020. Free.

Riverside Rhythm with Step Afrika!

Riverside Rhythm with Step Afrika! @ The Warehouse

The Delaware Art Museum welcomes Step Afrika! back to Wilmington with its newest production Drumfolk, inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, explores this little-known event in American history that forever transformed African-American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, their rhythms found their way into the body of the people, the Drumfolk.

Experience how the rhythm survived in Wilmington through performances by local groups culminating with a performance by Step Afrika! Followed by a Q & A with members of Step Afrika!, who include graduates of HBCU’s from across the nation. Come ask questions from young adults who were in your seats not to long ago! This event is being planned by the teens from Jack and Jill, Inc New Castle County Chapter and The Warehouse.

This event is designed for teens by teens.
