New! Distinguished Lecturers Series: Yoko Ono and Japanese Performance Artists with Dr. Midori Yoshimoto

The Distinguished Lecturers Series invites noted scholars to discuss the rich layers of history and ideas underlying the Delaware Art Museum’s collections. In the early 1960s, Yoko Ono bridged the art worlds between New York and Tokyo, facilitating creative artistic exchange among artists of both worlds. This talk by Dr. Midori Yoshimoto will highlight the imaginative work of Yoko Ono during the 1960s. It will also lay out the brief history of avant-garde performance in Japan and introduce Ono’s contemporaries.

Dr. Joan Navarre, Associate Professor, University of Wisconsin
Mar 19 @ 7:00 pm

Joan NavarreFrom the moment of its publication in 1894, the English illustrated edition of Salomé by Oscar Wilde and Aubrey Beardsley has been controversial, with Beardsley bearing the brunt of the blame. Erotic details—openly portrayed—appeared to have nothing to do with Wilde’s words. For more than 100 years, critics have debated whether the compositions really illustrate the text. This lecture explores the publishing history of the Wilde-Beardsley collaboration and sheds light on the responses (often resentful) of various readers, including the original publishers.
