Using the camera as a tool for creative expression, Stay Focused puts the student in control of the narrative, challenging them to view the spaces around them in new ways in order to share perspectives that are important to them. Founded and facilitated by photographer Shannon Woodloe, Stay Focused covers the history and core elements of photography, culminating in a theme-based photography project.
The project, “Beauty is…,” will be the students’ photographic responses to the marketing billboard for the Museum’s exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, which poses the questions, “What is beauty?”
A reception and exhibit of student works will be held December 12, 2019 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.
This Connected Series program is being offered in partnership with Serviam Girl’s Academy and Children and Families First’s Community Schools program at Bancroft Elementary School.

Celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through art and service in partnership with One Village Alliance and Raising Kings.
Portrait Photography
Monday, January 20 | 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
During the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, add your portrait to a wall of photographs of our community. To complement the exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, we are filling a wall of our entryway with portraits of our community members. 100 frames will slowly fill with photographs of locals, to add dimension to the portraits in the special exhibition itself. We’d love to include your portrait. Register to have your photograph taken by Joe McFetridge on January 20. Participants will receive a digital and print copy once the photographs come off the walls in spring 2020. Free.
Founded in 2016 by choreographer Jeremy McQueen, The Black Iris Project is a ballet collaborative and education vehicle that creates new, relevant classical and contemporary ballet works that celebrate diversity and Black history. “A Mother’s Rite” is a new ballet about how a mother copes with the loss of her child to a racially-motivated murder.
A powerful 38 minute solo ballet set to Igor Stravinsky’s iconic composition Rite of Spring that explores one mother’s journey through the stage of grief after being thrust into the spotlight by way of her son’s murder by police.
This engagement of Black Iris Project is made possible through the Special Presenter Initiatives program of the Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation with support from the National Endowment for the Arts and the Delaware Division of the Arts.

“…Ross’ precocious creativity, facility, and confidence were downright shocking. His style is so unique and developed that it changed my image of the vibraphone itself. Though his musicality [shone] through brightly, I was most impressed by the revolutionary way in which he approached the physicality of the instrument, reworking classic limitations as creative allowances.”
Chicago native Joel Ross has performed with historic and seasoned artists – Herbie Hancock, Louis Hayes, Christian McBride, and Stefon Harris – as well as with cutting-edge contemporaries like Ambrose Akinmusire, Gerald Clayton, and Marquis Hill. Twice selected as a Thelonious Monk Institute National All-Star and a 2013 YoungArts Jazz Finalist – he’s also had the opportunity to perform at the Brubeck, Monterey, Seattle, and Chicago Jazz Festivals -and- at internationally-celebrated venues like Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola in New York, SF Jazz in San Francisco, and Club Vibrato in Los Angeles.
Playing the drum kit as early as three years of age, Ross learned other percussion instruments & approaches beginning in grade five, in his tenth year. When starting his work on Vibes, he engaged both classical and jazz works, and did so throughout high school. In his last year there, Ross also began playing the piano in a more serious way.
Ross recently completed a two-year fellowship with the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet in California. Winning first place at the 2016 BIAMP PDX Jazz Festival ‘Jazz Forward’ Competition, he was also a winner of the Keep an Eye International Jazz Award, in Amsterdam. A fitting addition to the Marquis Hill Blacktet – before their 2016 European tour – Ross has just recorded his own debut album “Good Vibes,” to be released in August. He will be performing, also, with his newly minted Joel Ross’ Good Vibes ensemble.

With the Museum’s beautiful Chihuly Bridge overhead, Pyxis turns to music that spans time and geography and links composers to their homeland. Joaquín Turina’s Piano Trio is filled with the fire of Spain, and Zoltán Kodály’s Intermezzo draws on his beloved Hungarian folk tunes. The evening’s major work is Dvořák’s justly famous and masterful Piano Quartet in E-Flat Major.
At 7:30 p.m., a Museum curator will present a 15-minute pre-concert talk. You are also welcome to arrive early for dinner and light fare in the Museum’s Thronson Café. The concert begin at 8:00 and will feature complimentary desserts and coffee at intermission.
Season tickets are $90 for Museum Members, $105 for Non-Members, and $75 for students with a valid ID.
Individual tickets are $30 for Museum Members, $35 for Non-Members, and $25 for students.
About Pyxis Piano Quartet
Pyxis Piano Quartet performs chamber concerts that include works from the sonata, duo, and trio repertoire as well as traditional and contemporary masterpieces for piano quartet.
Compelling, engaging and informative, the vibrant performances of Pyxis Piano Quartet have become increasingly sought after in the mid-Atlantic region. The Philadelphia Inquirer has described Pyxis as “excellent,” and Christine Facciolo (deartsinfo.com) stated in a recent review “balance, ensemble, superb intonation and sensitive interpretation characterized this performance.”

Back by Popular demand, Step Afrika! returns to Wilmington with its blend of the percussive tradition of stepping with African and contemporary dance. The Company’s newest creation, Drumfolk, inspired by the Stono Rebellion of 1739, explores this little-known event in American history that forever transformed African-American life and culture. When Africans lost the right to use their drums, their rhythms found their way into the body of the people, the Drumfolk. New percussive forms took root leading to the development of some of our country’s most distinct performance traditions like the ring shout, tap, and stepping.
