Learn how to shake and move those hips! Each month, drop in and learn the basics of a new Latin dance style with Take the Lead Dance Studio. Attend one session to get your feet wet or attend both and polish your moves. All experience levels and teens welcome.

Open sessions; registration not required.

Concerts on Kentmere 2015–16: Site & Sound

Celebrating contemporary Latino art

In conjunction with the Museum’s exhibition Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art, Pyxis (with guest artists Ruotao Mao and Irina Schuck, violins) will play Enrique Granados’ Piano Quintet in G minor, Libertango and Four for Tango by Argentine composer Astor Piazzolla, and Antonin Dvořák’s Piano Quintet No. 2 in A Major, op. 1.

At 7:30 p.m. Curator Heather Campbell Coyle will give a brief talk and tour ofOur America: The Latino Presence in American Art, linking the musical repertoire with themes in the exhibition. The Museum is now open until 8:00 pm on Thursday evenings, and before the concerts, the Thronson Café will serve drinks and light fare for purchase.

Performances begin at 8:00 pm, with complimentary desserts and coffee served at intermission.

Kids’ Corner Family Workshops: Kaleidoscope Cove

IMG_9127_lowresThe Volta family, our Family-in-Residence, is installing Kaleidoscope Cove in Kids’ Corner now through the end of April and families are invited to participate in the creation process! Kaleidoscope Cove is an interactive installation that explores Howard Pyle’s work through a kaleidoscopic lens. The temporary installation will feature a cascading paper garland waterfall and curtain of paper gold coins, a kid-sized geometric cove, and details of Pyle’s work patterned on the walls. Drop-in on select Saturdays in April for a series of Family Workshops and contribute to this interactive work of art! Free.

This after-hours Night Carnival is inspired by the exhibition Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art and celebrates the diversity and fusion of Latin American culture within the city of Wilmington.

**Galleries will be open and performances will run from 6:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Rain or shine. Weather permitting, Noche de Carnaval performances will take place in the Museum’s Copeland Sculpture Garden.**

About the Performers

INTIKANA is an artist, educator, and filmmaker. He has been featured on VH1 and toured across the United States, Canada, Cuba, Borikén (Puerto Rico), Costa Rica, Guatemala, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, Tanzania, and Uganda, East Africa while sharing the stage with artists such as KRS-One, Immortal Technique, Jay Electronica, Raekwon, Afrika Bambaataa, Talib Kweli, Lupe Fiasco, The Last Poets, Dead Prez, and more. Intikana is also the recipient of The Bronx Council On The Arts’ BRIO (Bronx Recognizes Its Own) award for Excellence in Performing Arts. As a youth mentor and teaching artist, Intikana has spoken at hundreds of universities/colleges, high schools, elementary/middle schools, community centers, group homes, shelters, and prison facilities. He has worked with countless community organizations to provide innovative educational opportunities for youth through hip hop and social/cultural awareness.

DJ Perly is a female Puerto Rican Russian DJ who plays hip hop, Breaks, House music, and practices the art of turntablism with a passion. She has competed in The NYC DMC DJ Battles and is currently a 3x Freestyle Mondays DJ Battle Champion. DJ Perly is also a current member of the first Latino rocking crew, The Bronx Boys / Bronx Girls Rocking Crew, and also works with local artists who share the same love and passion for all things music.

DJ Soul Buck aka Mr. Street Sickness spins at various locations in Philadelphia such as Trocadero, The Khyber, and many more. He has taken his talents around the United States and recently Canada as a tour DJ for Digable Planets. You will be entertained when you’re listening to Mr. Street Sickness’ love for craft on the 1’s and 2′s! He will be playing Latin American-infused tunes you can dance to during Noche de Carnaval.

NENE ALI is a young spoken word poet and has a passion for the healing power of words and the ability to deliver mind-blowing performances. Nene has become a headline artist and performed at many venues throughout the northeast and midwestern United States. She captures her audience with a certain magical force all her own. The youngest recipient of Miami Heat Dwayne Wade “Keeper of the Village Award” and “Nelson Mandela Community Activist Award” Nene’s activism is attached to her art. After each performance she gets nothing less than a standing ovation and walks away with the inspiration to continue to make this world a better place! Nene recently performed as part of the Young Roots Performance Series at Hostos Center for the Arts & Culture (co-produced with Pepatian, October 2015) with poet Caridad De La Luz/La Bruja.

Orquesta Salsabor From Delaware is a Latin salsa band from Wilmington, DE and will be representing the pride of Latin people and keeping the tradition of Latin music alive in the city. What originally started as a family band has expanded to unite musicians and singers from the Delaware Valley and Philadelphia area. The freedom of expressing and playing the salsa hits of Tito Nieves, Frankie Ruiz, Luis Enrique, Victor Manuel, Marc Anthony, and many others brings fresh flavor to the local scene. Enjoy a sizzling flavor and a bit of swing to Latin music with a groove that will keep your feet moving!

This interactive installation— imagined by the Museum’s first Family-in-Residence, parents Ben and Eilish Volta and their two sons Milo and Thor—explores Howard Pyle’s work through a kaleidoscopic lens. The temporary installation features a cascading paper garland waterfall and a curtain of paper gold coins, a kid-sized geometric treasure cove, and details of Pyle’s work patterned on the walls. Kaleidoscope Cove will be on view through October 30, 2016.

Kids’ Corner Creativity Hours:
May-October: Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; and Sundays, Noon – 3:00 p.m.

During designated Creativity Hours, kids are invited to add materials to the evolving treasure cove and create their own kaleidoscopes. Families can also experience the Pyle galleries through the imagination of Milo and his gallery map while creating their own art-inspired maps.

American songs for American art

Wilmington musicians Emily Samson Tepe (soprano) and Julie Nishimura (piano) pay tribute to the Museum’s American holdings with a spirited evening of contemporary song.  The evening’s offerings will include Aaron Copland’s settings of Emily Dickinson poems, songs by William Bolcom and New York composer Noa Ain, as well as settings of ee cummings’ poems by Swedish composer Robert Sund.

At 7:30 pm before each concert, there will be a 15-minute pre-concert talk. The Museum is now open until 8:00 pm on Thursday evenings, and before the concerts, the Thronson Café will serve drinks and light fare for purchase. Performances begin at 8:00 pm, with complimentary desserts and coffee served at intermission.

This interactive installation— imagined by the Museum’s first Family-in-Residence, parents Ben and Eilish Volta and their two sons Milo and Thor—explores Howard Pyle’s work through a kaleidoscopic lens. The temporary installation features a cascading paper garland waterfall and a curtain of paper gold coins, a kid-sized geometric treasure cove, and details of Pyle’s work patterned on the walls. Kaleidoscope Cove will be on view through October 30, 2016.

Kids’ Corner Creativity Hours:
May-October: Thursdays, 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m.; Fridays, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.; and Sundays, Noon – 3:00 p.m.

Writers in Wilmington brings notable writers to the Museum for enthralling readings of poetry, fiction, and creative non-fiction. Don’t miss your opportunity to meet one of the region’s most treasured fiction writers! Marisa de los Santos, a New York Times best-selling author who lives in Wilmington, has written a number of popular novels, including Love Walked In, Belong to Me, and Falling Together. During this reading, Marisa will share excerpts from her recently released book The Precious One, a captivating novel about friendship, family, second chances, and the power of love. There will be a brief Q&A after the reading.

Connected: Community Cornerstone with Delaware Shakespeare Festival - “Our America, Our Shakespeare"

Hear scenes and monologues written by members of Delaware’s Latino community that reflect various aspects of their experiences arriving in America, inspired by key moments in The Comedy of Errors as well as by artwork in the Delaware Art Museum’s special exhibition Our America: The Latino Presence in American Art. Light refreshments following the program. Directed by Erlina Ortiz. This program is a collaboration between the Latin American Community Center and Delaware Shakespeare Festival, in conjunction with DSF’s Summer 2016 production of The Comedy of Errors.

The Museum is hosting a casual version of New York society’s famed Black and White Ball to celebrate the opening of Edward Koren: The Capricious Line, an exhibition honoring the career of the renowned cartoonist, graphic satirist, and long-standing contributor to The New Yorker. Dress in your favorite black-and-white attire and enjoy a lively party that includes live music from the classic American songbook performed by The Rhythm Doctors and treats inspired by the Plaza’s original Black and White Ball menu.

Join Executive Director and CEO Sam Sweet in the newly re-installed Copeland Sculpture Garden for a traditional family-style picnic. Margaret Winslow, Curator of Contemporary Art, will be available to offer an overview of the Garden’s updates and additions. Bring a blanket or lawn chairs and listen to the live music of Americana band Betty & the Bullet.

View the special one-day pop-up installation The Tent of Casually Observed Phenologies and tarot readings by artist James Leonard. Members will also be able to sketch live animals with the Delaware Museum of Natural History until 6:00 p.m. or stay for the screening of Very Semi-Serious: A Partially Thorough Portrait of The New Yorker Cartoonist at 6:30 p.m. in celebration of the special exhibition Edward Koren: The Capricious Line.

In the event of inclement weather, the event will be moved indoors. Picnic dinner will be provided. Cash bar.
