Juried Craft Exhibition
October 20, 2018 – January 27, 2019

For over 90 years, the Delaware Art Museum has showcased contemporary craft in its temporary exhibitions by artists working locally and throughout the region. Capitalizing on the Museum’s popular annual exhibitions of drawings, prints, paintings, sculptures, and watercolors, the first juried Contemporary Crafts Show was formally established in 1958. Since then, a rich array of woodwork, ceramics, furniture, jewelry, textiles, metalwork, glass, enamel, and leather has been selected by jurors from museums and universities located throughout the United States. Selected by Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Director and juror Paul Sacaridiz, the 2018 Juried Craft Exhibition will celebrate this long history and one of the most vital modes of artistic production today.

The Crossing
Feb 7 @ 8:00 pm

“The Crossing…imbues the music with both energy and awe.” – Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle

Performance repertoire:
the little match girl, by David Lang
selections from the Jeff Quartets

The Crossing is a professional chamber choir conducted by Donald Nally and dedicated to new music. It is committed to working with creative teams to make and record new, substantial works for choir – most often addressing social issues – with the possibility of changing the way we think about writing for choir, singing in choir, and listening to music for choir.

Highly sought-after for collaborative projects, The Crossing’s first such partnership was as the resident choir of the Spoleto Festival in Italy, in 2007. Since then, collaborators include the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE), American Composers Orchestra, Network for New Music, Lyric Fest, PRISM Saxophone Quartet, Beth Morrison Projects, Pig Iron Theatre Company, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts, Mostly Mozart Festival, National Gallery of Art, Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Cleveland Museum, Institute for Advanced Study, Carnegie Hall, National Sawdust, and Northwestern University. The Crossing holds an annual residency at the Warren Miller Performing Arts Center in Big Sky, Montana. The Crossing has presented more than 60 commissioned world premieres, including works by Michael Gordon, John Luther Adams, David Lang, Anna Thorvaldsdottir, Gavin Bryars, Ted Hearne, Caroline Shaw, David T. Little, Robert Maggio, Gabriel Jackson, Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, and Hans Thomalla.

With a commitment to recording its commissions, The Crossing has issued 14 releases, receiving a Grammy Award for Best Choral Performance in 2018, its second nomination in as many years. The Crossing, with Donald Nally, is the American Composers Forum’s 2017 Champion of New Music. They are the recipients of the 2015 Margaret Hillis Award for Choral Excellence, three ASCAP Awards for Adventurous Programming, and the Dale Warland Singers Commission Award from Chorus America.

Lifted! Rennie Harris’ Puremovement
Mar 8 @ 8:00 pm
Lifted! Rennie Harris’ Puremovement @ The Grand Opera House

In Lifted, 2009 Guggenheim Fellow, Dr. Lorenzo “Rennie” Harris merges the powerful rhythms of house music with moving gospel vocals for a contemporary exploration of community and spirituality through dance. Loosely based on the story of Oliver Twist, Lifted follows a young black man from trouble to triumph as he is ultimately “lifted” by his church community. With choreography by Rennie Harris and music directed by Steven Sapp and Mildred Ruiz-Sapp, this new work promises to be an exhilarating dance narrative.

“A tapestry of elegantly fluid popping and locking…phenomenal.” – The New York Times

Famn d’Ayiti by Nathalie Joachim with the Spektral Quartet
Jul 25 @ 8:00 pm
Famn d'Ayiti by Nathalie Joachim with the Spektral Quartet

Fanm d’Ayiti (Women of Haiti) is an evening-length work for voice, flute, string quartet and electronics developed by composer/performer Nathalie Joachim. Commissioned by St. Paul Chamber Orchestra’s Liquid Music Series, Fanm d’Ayiti is a celebration of some of Haiti’s most iconic yet under recognized female artists, as well as an exploration of Joachim’s Haitian heritage. The project features original songs incorporating the recorded voices of Joachim’s grandmother and the girls choir of her family’s home farming village of Dantan; new arrangements of songs by some of the greatest known female voices in Haitian history; and recorded interviews with these artists about their lives fighting for social justice and uplifting the people of Haiti. Developed in a two year Liquid Music Virtual Residency, Fanm d’Ayiti premiered in March 2018 with members of SPCO in St. Paul, MN, and will be presented in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 season with Spektral Quartet.

Flutist and composer Nathalie Joachim (Eighth Blackbird, Flutronix), “an edgy multi-genre performance artist who has long been pushing boundaries with her flute” (The Washington Post)

SPEKTRAL QUARTET actively pursues a vivid conversation between exhilarating works of the traditional canon and those written this decade, this year, or this week. With the New York Times writing that “they have everything: a supreme technical command that seems to come easily, a capacity to make complicated music clear, and, most notably…an ability to cast a magic spell”, Spektral is known for creating seamless connections across centuries, drawing in the listener with charismatic deliveries, interactive concert formats, an up-close atmosphere, and bold, inquisitive programming.
