Oct 24 @ 8:00 pm
Performance: Raye Jones Avery & Adagio with Dennis Fortune, Musical Director

“Between” is the sophomore release from Raye Jones Avery. A native of Philadelphia, Raye grew up in Wilmington, Delaware where she has been a staple in US arts world. As Executive Director of the Christina Cultural Arts Center, Raye has been one of the driving forces in the continued flourishing of creative arts in the Mid Atlantic region. Now, Raye is stepping out to make a more personal statement on her 2nd CD, produced by Dennis Fortune. Fortune also produced Raye’s debut recording project “Sistah Girl’s Lament”. E. Shawn Qaissaunee produced and arranged selections on “Between” as well. Between” was independently produced and recorded at Reeds Refuge Studio 505 in Wilmington.

Raye’s multi-genre influenced style brings new life to standards such as “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” and “Where Were You” by Stevie Wonder, John Legend’s “Ordinary People” and the Beatles’ “She’s Leaving Home”. “Between” also includes an original spoken word tribute to Clifford Brown. “Raye will perform musical director and pianist Dennis Fortune.

“Between” is an eclectic collection of selections that convey the miraculous ability to feel joy even in the presence of life’s tribulations. Raye describes her work as a “personal artistic statement about living. It’s about transcendence without losing my song”.

Personnel:

Raye Jones Avery, vocals
Dennis Fortune, musical director, piano
Cliff Kellum, bass
Harry Butch Reed, drums
Lynn Riley, woodwinds
Darnell Miller, guitar/vocals

To complement the exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, we are filling a wall of our entryway with portraits of our community members. 100 frames will slowly fill with photographs of locals, to add dimension to the portraits in the special exhibition itself. There are multiple scheduled events this fall/winter where visitors will have the opportunity to be photographed for this project. One of them is before Raye Jones Avery’s performance on October 24.

We’d love to include your face in the wall of local portraits. A local professional photographer, Joe McSetridge, will be at the Museum on Thursday evening, October 24 (6-8 p.m.) to shoot photographs. Participants will receive a digital copy, and also receive a print copy once the photographs come off the walls in 2020. It would be our honor to include your face in this project. If you are interested in participating, please sign up using the link in the ticket confirmation email.

Connected: Beauty is... Reception & Exhibition

Using the camera as a tool for creative expression, Stay Focused puts the student in control of the narrative, challenging them to view the spaces around them in new ways in order to share perspectives that are important to them. Founded and facilitated by photographer Shannon Woodloe, Stay Focused covers the history and core elements of photography, culminating in a theme-based photography project.

The project, “Beauty is…,” will be the students’ photographic responses to the marketing billboard for the Museum’s exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, which poses the questions, “What is beauty?”

A reception and exhibit of student works will be held December 12, 2019 from 6 pm to 7:30 pm.

This Connected Series program is being offered in partnership with Serviam Girl’s Academy and Children and Families First’s Community Schools program at Bancroft Elementary School.

Monday, January 20 | 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

During the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service, add your portrait to a wall of photographs of our community. To complement the exhibition Posing Beauty in African American Culture, we are filling a wall of our entryway with portraits of our community members. 100 frames will slowly fill with photographs of locals, to add dimension to the portraits in the special exhibition itself. We’d love to include your  portrait. Register to have your photograph taken by Joe McFetridge on  January 20. Participants will receive a digital and print copy once the photographs come off the walls in spring 2020. Free.
