Metalsmithing Open Studio (morning)

Saturdays, July 18 – August 22 (6 weeks)
9:30 am – 12:30 pm
$175 Members, $200 Non-Members

 This is an opportunity for experienced metals students to work independently in the Museum’s metalsmithing studio.  Completion of Beyond Beginner Jewelry Making or approval by a Museum metals instructor is required to attend. Monitored: Mara Wolff 

Completion of Beyond Beginner Jewelry Making or approval by a Museum metals instructor is required to attend. Each Metalsmithing Open Studio session is limited to four students to maintain social distancing. Students must follow safety procedures by filling out a brief questionnaire upon arrival and wearing a mask at all times. (Intermediate/Advanced)

Virtual Metalsmithing Workshop: Chain Making

Wednesday, July 29
3 pm – 5:30 pm
$30 Members, $50 Non-Members

Get your pliers ready and gear up for this back to basics (and not so basic) chain making workshop. Students will learn and review the molecular properties of metal and focus on chain making and wire working skills as they relate to metalsmithing. Students will learn a few adapted at home skills for creating uniform jump rings and explore other ways of incorporating chain into their work. Students will also have the opportunity to create some decorative clasps and ear hooks while discussing concepts of balance and contrast. The option to incorporate found objects such as ribbon, shells, or netting will be explored. Experimentation and out of the box thinking highly encouraged. (Beginner) Monitored: Mara Wolff.

Virtual Demo: Ephemeral Wearable Art

In this demo you will use elements of nature to create ephemeral wearable art including necklaces and bracelets, while thinking about and discussing the fleeting vulnerability of what you are creating.

Virtual Workshop: Fabric Arts Jewelry

Get creative and technical at home with this fiber arts jewelry zoom workshop. Students will implement basic sewing techniques for the use of fiber-based chain, quilted neck pieces and more. Students will discuss how elements of design, color and fabric content can alter and enhance a wearable piece of art. Crazy fabric, alternative materials (think pool raft) strongly encouraged.
