John Sloan kept diaries from 1906 through early 1913. Entries are irregular in 1912 and 1913 and the diary ends on May 21, 1913.
With the encouragement of his second wife Helen Farr Sloan, the artist resumed diary writing from 1944 to 1951. The late diaries often include his musings on his earlier life and career.
The links below take you to searchable, downloadable PDFs of transcriptions of Sloan’s diaries. These are not abridged, and they have been annotated by scholars in conversation with Helen Farr Sloan.
Late diaries (1944–1951) coming soon!
