The Cultivated Eye—
Brandywine Valley Photographers

Brandywine Creek at Breck's Mill

Through October 21, 2007

The Delaware Art Museum presents The Cultivated Eye—Brandywine Valley Photographers, an exhibition of nature photography featuring the works of artists from the region, on view from June 1 through October 21. The 39 works in this show display a wide range of responses to the natural world and a variety of approaches to the medium of photography.

The Cultivated Eye includes works by Kathleen Buckalew, Rob Cardillo, Lisa Tyson Ennis, Alida Fish, Mickey Freed, Jim Graham, Barbara Proud, Danny Schweers, Priscilla Smith, and Carson Zullinger. These photographers discover beauty in unexpected places.

Many of the works in The Cultivated Eye present the local landscape from new perspectives. The photographers find their subjects in Arden, Philadelphia, and Centerville, at Longwood Gardens, Bellevue State Park, and Naaman’s Creek. Some of the images are instantly recognizable; others are elusive, but strangely familiar. Beauty is found not only in the landscape but in individual plants—isolated specimens, both living and dead, examined up close. The exhibition includes works in color and black and white, and works that have been digitally manipulated and traditionally photographed and printed.

The Cultivated Eye opens during the evening of Friday, June 1, when the Delaware Art Museum is open late and free to the public, from 5:30 p.m. to midnight, for the city of Wilmington’s monthly Art on the Town program. The city of Wilmington will provide the Museum with D.J.’s from 8:00 p.m. to midnight, and the Museum will offer a cash bar throughout the evening.
