Jewish Traditions & the Visual Arts

Sunday, September 26, 2:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Free with Museum admission/Members Free

Jewish Traditions & the Visual Arts

In conjunction with the opening of the Leonard Baskin exhibition, Museum Director Danielle Rice will engage Rabbi Michael Beals in a conversation regarding Jewish laws and traditions and how they have impacted the visual arts of the centuries. Baskin was the son of a Rabbi, and he received a traditional yeshiva education which had a significant effect on his aesthetic. Yet Jewish practice (which takes very seriously the commandment against graven images) has often been seen as limiting the development of visual art.

This informal discussion will analyze art made by Jewish artists and Jewish artistic traditions in light of Jewish beliefs and teachings.
