Planning Your Estate

One of the most important things you can do for yourself and those you care about is to plan your estate thoughtfully. No matter what your net worth, proper planning is key to providing security for you and your family’s financial future. Good planning can also insure that your assets are ultimately distributed as you intend.

When you articulate your priorities and charitable gift intentions, you are communicating your core values. To do so in support of the mission of the Delaware Art Museum is easily accomplished.

Besides being personally satisfying, making a lifetime gift can be financially sensible, too. Tax savings and, in some cases, annual payments are benefits you can enjoy, along with the knowledge that you’re supporting the work of the Museum into perpetuity to connect people to art, to preserve the community’s treasures, and to generate creative energy.

By including the Delaware Art Museum in your estate planning, you:

  • Help the Museum acquire new pieces of art, broadening and enhancing the scope of the collection
  • Bring special exhibitions of world-renowned artists to the region
  • Enable a child to experience the thrill of attending a Delaware Art Museum summer camp or participate in a studio program
  • Conserve works of art in the collection and historical materials in the Helen Farr Sloan Library & Archives
  • Ensure the vitality of the Museum well into the next century

Join Our Legacy Society

You can become a Member of the Helen Farr Sloan Legacy Society through:

  • A gift from your estate, such as including the Delaware Art Museum as a beneficiary under your will, retirement plan benefits, life insurance, and/or living trust; or
  • A gift that pays a fixed or variable income, such as establishing a charitable annuity or trust with income for you or others and a benefit for the Museum.

Helen Farr Sloan

Helen Farr Sloan (1911-2005) nurtured a special relationship with the Delaware Art Museum that began in 1961 and continued throughout her life. An artist and art teacher, she became a formidable patron of the arts as the widow of John Sloan (1871-1951), an artist renowned for his realistic images of turn-of-the-century New York City. Through her dedication to the arts and her quiet generosity, she created a most remarkable profile as an American philanthropist. Following the death of her husband, she devoted herself to disseminating the artist’s estate, turning it into an exceptional philanthropic instrument to serve local, regional, national, and international arts constituencies.

For the benefit of the Delaware Art Museum, Helen Farr Sloan donated or aided in the acquisition of more than 5,000 works, including the preeminent collection of the art of John Sloan with virtually every aspect of his career represented. At her death in 2005, she also left the Delaware Art Museum a legacy of $6.8 million that played a crucial role in stabilizing the Museum’s financial situation after an ambitious expansion project.

Helen Farr Sloan’s generosity leaves a legacy of inspiration for all who share her passion for the arts.
