Drawing and Painting

2D Studio: Fun with Drawing and Painting

Whether you are an experienced artist or just starting out, join us for this exciting class where you will work from still lives and/or photos in any drawing or water-media of your choice! Students will receive individual instruction and critique. Students are welcome to use pencil, pastel, charcoal, gouache, watercolor, acrylic paint, and more. Come for support, critiques, companionship, and instruction in a relaxed and fun atmosphere! Beginners will start with drawing, while intermediate to advanced students can use a medium of their choice. (B)(I)(A)

Learning to Draw What You See

This drawing class is open to all levels! Beginners will learn fundamental skills and basic techniques. They will begin to “look as an artist looks” through a series of exercises from Betty Edwards’ Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain. Drawing is a learned skill, not an inherited talent. Gesture, contour, measured proportion, form, and quality of line will be emphasized. Introduction to Watercolor

This introductory/intermediate watercolor class is designed to provide students with all the necessary skills to take command of their watercolor painting. The class will cover materials, composition, and a one-two-three layering technique that keeps watercolors fresh and airy. Classic paint application methods like wet-on-wet, using resists, and employing other additives round out the techniques demonstrated. This course is fun, relaxed, and welcoming. Painting in the Loper Tradition

Loosen up your watercolor skills with fun techniques and lively pictures! In this class, students will explore composition, gesture, structure, balance, and proportion using the human form. This is a great class for both beginners who would like to learn the basics of figure drawing, as well as more experienced individuals who want to refine their techniques! Open Figure Drawing Studio

Whether you are experienced at drawing the human figure or just beginning, this open studio is a great way to work from a live model. Busy individuals now have an opportunity to take time for themselves and be creative. All drawing media is welcome—bring your choice of pencils, charcoal, pastels, and paper.

A Touch of Gold

Learn to enhance your silver creations by adding gold! Create beautiful and unique jewelry by overlaying and fabricating with scrap gold and/or bits from gold jewelry no longer worn. Also, students will explore the Korean technique of Keum Bu, in which 24 KT gold is fused to silver. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. Knowledge of soldering and fabricating is required. (I)

Beginning Jewelry Making

Students will learn the fundamentals of jewelry making: sawing, filing, soldering, and polishing. They will learn how to use tools and machinery, as well as how to design a piece of jewelry, create surface decoration, set stones, and use different kinds of metal. In this class, students will make a ring, pin or pendant, earrings, and bracelet. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. (B)

Intermediate Jewelry Making

This class will build on the jewelry making skills that students have learned in Beginning Jewelry Making. Students will also have the option to make stone settings and work on perfecting jewelry. This class will be less structured to allow students to explore areas of their interest. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. (I)

Intermediate/Advanced Jewelry Making

Here is your chance to further your jewelry making skills. In this class we will explore techniques to take your jewelry beyond the basic level with a wide range of jewelry making processes. Students will learn non-complex metal forming, mechanisms and joining techniques. While following instructor guidelines, students will make use of fundamental hand skills to create their own designs. Through hands-on classes and instructor demonstration, students will learn how to employ solid design techniques and pick up useful “bench tips” along the way. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. Knowledge of sawing, filing, and soldering is required. (I)(A)

Texturing

Through instructor demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice, students will explore texturing and find exciting ways to add a new dimension to their metal pieces! They will learn hammered texturing techniques, create textures by roll-printing, and illustrate metals by scribing. Students will be amazed to see how the use of everyday objects can be used to create unusual and intriguing surfaces! Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. Students must have completed Beginning and Intermediate levels of Jewelry Making at the Delaware Art Museum or be able to verify equivalent courses taken at another institution.

Digital Photography

All levels of photographers are welcome! Learn how to become a better photographer with your own camera. This class will focus on developing fundamental technical skills for digital cameras. Basics such as how to determine a proper exposure, use of depth of field, and what goes into a well composed image will be covered. The first half of the class term will concentrate on developing technical skills, with the second half shifting to creating photographs for personal expression. Access to a computer and printer is needed. An SLR digital camera is preferred, or a digital camera with multiple program modes. (B)(I)

Have you ever wanted to learn to make your own scarves and wearable art? This workshop is a great way to learn the traditional techniques of fiber art such as knitting, crochet, and embroidery! Students will take inspiration from some of the Museum’s exhibitions to create their one of a kind functional and fine artwork. Make yourself a warm scarf just in time for cold weather, or give it to a loved one for Valentine’s Day! Adults and teenagers are welcome. (B)(I)

Fiber Arts Workshop II: Contemporary Fiber Techniques

In this new workshop, students will learn a variety of contemporary fiber techniques. Explore a fantastic new medium with much admired illustrator James Gurney, whose work will be featured in an exhibition at the Museum called Dinotopia: The Fantastical Art of James Gurney. In this one day, hands-on workshop, students will learn about water-soluble colored pencils, which are inexpensive yet versatile and easy to use! Gurney will guide students through a digital slide presentation followed by a painting/drawing demonstration. Students will then do their own drawings from life while experimenting with the medium.
