Drawing and Painting

2D Studio: Fun with Drawing and Painting

Whether you are an experienced artist or just starting out, join us for this exciting class where you will work from still lives and/or photos in any drawing or water-media of your choice! Students will receive individual instruction and critique. Students are welcome to use pencil, pastel, charcoal, gouache, watercolor, acrylic paint, and more! Come for support, critiques, companionship, and instruction in a relaxed and fun atmosphere! Beginners will start with drawing, while intermediate to advanced students can use a medium of their choice. (B)(I)(A)

Plein Air Landscape Painting

House Portraits

Drawing your own home, a beach house, or another favorite residence is easy with step-by-step instructions. Students will have fun drawing and painting dwellings of their choice in this new class. Drawing is a learned skill, not an inherited talent. Gesture, contour, measured proportion, form, and quality of line will be emphasized. Introduction to Watercolor

This introductory/intermediate watercolor class is designed to provide students with all the necessary skills to take command of their watercolor painting. The class will cover materials, composition, and a one-two-three layering technique that keeps watercolors fresh and airy. Classic paint application methods like wet-on-wet, using resists, and employing other additives round out the techniques demonstrated. This course is fun, relaxed, and welcoming. Painting in the Loper Tradition

Watercolor Fun

All skill levels are welcome for this class. Loosen up and have fun with this wonderful medium. Paint large, using large brushes while listening to jazz. In this class, students will explore composition, gesture, structure, balance, and proportion using the human form. This is a great class for both beginners who would like to learn the basics of figure drawing, as well as more experienced individuals who want to refine their techniques. Whether you are experienced at drawing the human figure or just beginning, this open studio is a great way to work from a live model. Located in the Education Wing, this program offers busy individuals an opportunity to take time for themselves and be creative. All drawing media is welcome—bring your choice of pencils, charcoal, pastels, and paper.

Art Plastic and Cold Connections

Add some new techniques to your repertoire! Students will learn how to easily make colorful jewelry elements out of art plastic and finish them by using beading techniques and cold connections. A Touch of Gold

Learn to enhance your silver creations by adding gold. Create beautiful and unique jewelry by overlaying and fabricating with scrap gold and/or bits from gold jewelry that you no longer wear. Also, students will explore the Korean technique of Keum Bu, in which 24kt gold is fused to silver. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. Knowledge of soldering and fabricating is required. (I)(A)

Beginning Jewelry Making

Students will learn the fundamentals of jewelry making: sawing, filing, soldering, and polishing. They will learn how to use tools and machinery as well as how to design a piece of jewelry, create surface decoration, set stones, and use different kinds of metal. In this class, students will make a ring, pin or pendant, earrings, and bracelet. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. (B)

Torch-Fired Enameling

This class will introduce students of all levels to basic enameling techniques using a torch rather than a kiln. Students will learn how to apply opaque, liquid, and transparent enamels. The class will experiment with scraffito, screens, stencils, crayons, and more!  Settings and cold joining will also be discussed. Demonstrations will be given each day, leaving time for experimentation and discovery. Supplies available for purchase on the first day of class. (B)(I)(A)

Intermediate Jewelry Making

This class will build on the jewelry making skills that students have learned in Beginning Jewelry Making. Students will work at their own pace, having the opportunity to emboss, fabricate metal, and explore other surface decoration techniques. Students will also have the option to make stone settings and work on perfecting jewelry. This class will be less structured to allow students to explore areas of their interest. Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. (I)

Masters in Motion

In this exciting new class, students will learn the techniques of the most well-known master metalsmiths! The first class will focus on fabricating a link bracelet using Alexander Calder’s riveting techniques. Each following class will be spent making charms in the style of artists such as Cynthia Eid, Sandra Enterline, Alexander Calder, Vina Rust, Barbara Heinrich, Charles Lewton Brain, and Andy Cooperman. Students will finish the class with a beautiful bracelet reflecting all of the styles they learned. Don’t miss this informative and fun class!  Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. Knowledge of sawing, filing and soldering is required. (I)(A)

Stone Setting

Through instructor demonstrations and supervised hands-on practice, students will learn the basic construction of prong, tube, flush, basket, and single stone channel settings, and also learn about setting irregular shaped cabochons. Students will brush up on their bezel setting skills as well. Repeat students welcome! Basic supplies will be provided; extra materials will be discussed in class. This is an opportunity for experienced jewelry students to work in the Museum’s metals studio. A studio monitor will be present for safety and studio maintenance. This is not an instructed class. Students must have completed Beginning and Intermediate levels of Jewelry Making at the Delaware Art Museum or be able to verify equivalent courses taken at another institution.

Digital Photography

All levels of photographers are welcome! Learn how to become a better photographer with your own camera. This class will focus on developing fundamental technical skills for digital cameras. Basics such as how to determine a proper exposure, use of depth of field, and what goes into a well-composed image will be covered. The first half of the class term will concentrate on developing technical skills with the second half shifting to creating photographs for personal expression. Access to a computer and printer is needed. An SLR digital camera is preferred, or a digital camera with multiple program modes. (B)(I)

Join Carol Maurer, M.Ed., for an eight-session workshop to learn to relax and renew in the Copeland Sculpture Garden. Discover the Sun Style, which is easy to learn and consists of 12 movements that flow like the clouds in the sky. Sun Style is especially effective for relaxation and the higher stance makes it more suitable for all ages and abilities. Wear loose, comfortable clothing and flat shoes. In the event of rain, an indoor location will be available. Group will meet on the North Terrace of the Museum. (B)(I)(A)

Fiber Arts Workshop: Contemporary Fiber Techniques

In this new workshop, students will learn a variety of contemporary fiber techniques. Dinotopia Plates and Platters

Dinotopia Workshop with James Gurney: Creature Design

(Ages 12 – adult)—How do you draw or paint something that doesn’t exist? Explore a new world of art with much admired author and illustrator James Gurney, whose work is featured in the Museum ’s special exhibition, Dinotopia: The Fantastical Art of James Gurney. In this one day, hands-on workshop, students will explore commonly found organic or mechanical forms, rendering them from observation and re-working into a realistic creature design. Objects will be available to draw from, such as driftwood, roots, and gourds, but participants are also encouraged to bring in their own items. Gurney will also guide students through a digital slide presentation followed by a painting/drawing demonstration. Join us for a lively day of art making and a truly unique experience! (B)(I)(A)
