ArtSmart programs are collaborations between Delaware Art Museum and an area school, where students showcase art they created in response to touring the galleries. At an ArtSmart Event, students and their families are “VIPs” to the Museum as they view a showcase of student artwork, take part in gallery activities designed by the school and Museum’s education staff, and participate in Docent-led gallery talks. Generally, an ArtSmart Event is the culmination of one or more school visits to the Museum.
Teacher workshops are held to familiarize educators with the Museum’s permanent collection and special exhibitions. Credit hours are available for these curriculum enriching programs. To participate in a teacher workshop (Delaware teachers), you must register in advance by contacting the Delaware Teacher Center at 302.736.6723 or 1.800.282.8770. For teachers outside of Delaware, contact the Education Department at 302-351.8509 or via e-mail at cwaring@delart.org. The cost to attend a teacher workshop is $10.00 unless otherwise noted.
Victorian Art and Life
Saturday, February 7, 2009 | 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
In addition to learning about the Museum’s collection of British Pre-Raphaelite art, the largest collection of Pre-Raphaelite art outside of the United Kingdom, teachers will enjoy a tour of the special exhibition Paintings from the Reign of Victoria: The Royal Holloway Collection. Collected by Thomas Holloway (1800-1883), a self-made multi-millionaire, The Royal Holloway Collection includes many of the most visible and praised “modern canvases” in London in the 1880s. From scenes of contemporary life, as well as historical events, to landscapes, animal studies, and marine subjects, this exhibition demonstrates Holloway’s Victorian ideal of art as the ultimate civilizing influence and illustrates some of the highest achievements in the figurative and landscape art of the 19th century.
African American Art
Saturday, May 9, 2009 | 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.
This workshop introduces teachers to the Museum’s special exhibition Ancestry and Innovation: African American Art from the American Folk Art Museum, which celebrates the enduring contribution of self-taught black artists to the American visual experience. Featuring 39 works by artists from the rural south and urban north working in various mediums, these artists present to us an eloquent vision of their life stories through works of powerful artistry. In addition to touring the special exhibition, participants will view works by African American artists represented in the Museum’s permanent collection.
The Delaware Art Museum Education staff offer professional development opportunities for school districts, parent-teacher organizations, or any group interested in learning more about the Museum’s collections and programming.
Funding for school tours and bus transportation is available through the Red Apple Fund.
