Found

Found, designed 1865; begun 1869 (unfinished)
Dante Gabriel Rossetti (1828-1882)
Oil on canvas, 30 x 35 inches
Delaware Art Museum, Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft Memorial, 1935

In Found, the scene is early morning light, when a man, bringing his calf to the city of London on market day, comes upon a woman collapsed by the side of the road, her face green with illness. As he goes to her aid, he recognizes her as his sweetheart of earlier (and happier days) from his country village. Rossetti hints at her fallen state by including faded roses on her dress.
