Delaware Art Museum Announces Gifts Totaling $1.7 Million
WILMINGTON, DE (October 29, 2014) – The Delaware Art Museum announced today that it has received three generous gifts totaling $1.7 million to fully endow the Museum’s Curator of the Bancroft Collection of Pre-Raphaelite Art. The Bancroft Curator endowment—the Museum’s first endowed position—was supported by two anonymous donations and a gift from Peggy and Ed Woolard of Wilmington, Delaware. The endowment will be named the Annette Woolard-Provine Endowed Curator of the Bancroft Collection in honor of the Woolards’ daughter, who is also a current Delaware Art Museum Trustee.
“Endowed curator positions help museums attract and retain the most talented scholars in the profession,” says Mike Miller, Chief Executive Officer, Delaware Art Museum. “We are delighted that three very generous donors chose to invest in the Museum and in the Bancroft Collection through this incredible joint gift. These gifts demonstrate the community’s ongoing support and desire to see the Museum thrive.”
About the Bancroft Collection
Samuel Bancroft, Jr. (1840 – 1915), a Wilmington textile mill owner, was “shocked with delight” upon viewing his first Pre-Raphaelite painting in 1880. His decision to collect Pre-Raphaelite art was highly unusual, both within the local community and in the United States, as British Pre-Raphaelite artists were relatively unknown outside of the United Kingdom. By the time of his death in 1915, Bancroft had assembled a collection of over 100 paintings, prints and drawings, in addition to a significant library and archive, all of which was bequeathed to the Museum in 1935. The Samuel and Mary R. Bancroft Collection has continued to expand and is one of the largest and most significant Pre-Raphaelite holdings outside of the United Kingdom.
In 1935, when the Samuel Bancroft’s family donated his Pre-Raphaelite collection to the Wilmington Society of the Fine Arts (now the Delaware Art Museum), they also donated 11 acres of land on Kentmere Parkway in Wilmington.
Press Statement: Delaware Art Museum Retires Debt
WILMINGTON, DE (September 24, 2014) – The Board of Trustees of the Delaware Art Museum confirmed today that the Museum’s $19.8 million bond debt, issued in 2003 to finance the expansion of the Museum, will be paid in full on September 30, 2014. After years of attempting to retire the debt through fundraising, refinancing, and strategic partnerships, the Museum’s Trustees voted unanimously in March 2014 to save the Museum by selling up to four works of art from the Museum’s 12,500-object collection.
The bond debt will be paid with proceeds from the sale of William Holman Hunt’s Isabella and the Pot of Basil (1868), the recent private sale of Alexander Calder’s Black Crescent (1959), and funds from the Museum’s investment portfolio. Proceeds from the sale of Winslow Homer’s Milking Time (1875) and a possible fourth work are expected to replenish the investment portfolio when the sales are completed. No works of art acquired through gift or bequest will be sold.
“Payment of this debt is a critical milestone in the history of the Delaware Art Museum,” says Delaware Art Museum CEO Mike Miller. “This process has been excruciatingly difficult for everyone involved. WILMINGTON, DE (August 7, 2014) – The Board of Trustees of the Delaware Art Museum confirmed today that Winslow Homer’s Milking Time (1875) and Alexander Calder’s Black Crescent (1959) have been removed from the Museum’s 12,500-object permanent collection as part of the previously-announced plan to sell up to four acquired works of art from the Museum’s collection in order to keep the Museum open. At this time, Museum Trustees will not provide any additional details on the sale process for the two aforementioned works.
William Holman Hunt’s Isabella and The Pot of Basil (1868) was sold via Christie’s on June 17 for $4.25 million. No gifts or bequests to the Museum will be sold.

WILMINGTON, DE (June 17, 2014) – The Delaware Art Museum announced today that the Pre-Raphaelite painting Isabella and the Pot of Basil by William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) was sold for £2,882,500 through Christie’s auction of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite, and British Impressionist Art in London. Isabella and the Pot of Basil was sold to prevent the Museum’s closure and to repay a $19.8 million bond debt.

WILMINGTON, DE (May 6, 2014) – The Board of Trustees of the Delaware Art Museum announced today that the Pre-Raphaelite painting Isabella and the Pot of Basil by William Holman Hunt (1827–1910) will be sold in London through Christie’s auction house at its June 17 auction of Victorian, Pre-Raphaelite, and British Impressionist Art. The Museum purchased Isabella and the Pot of Basil in 1947 using general art acquisition funds. This is the first of up to four works of art that will be sold over the next several months.
The Museum’s Board of Trustees voted unanimously on March 26, 2014, to deaccession and sell up to four works of art from the Museum’s 12,500-object collection. The funds generated from the sale, projected to be $30 million, will repay the full balance of the Museum’s $19.8 million bond debt and replenish the endowment, which will place the Museum on a firm financial basis for the future. The sale of the other works of art will be finalized and announced in the coming months. No works of art acquired through gift or bequest will be sold.
Press Statement: Delaware Art Museum Board of Trustees Vote to Retire Debt
WILMINGTON, DE (March 26, 2014) – The Board of Trustees of the Delaware Art Museum announced today their unanimous vote to deaccession and sell up to four works of art from the Museum’s 12,500-object permanent collection. The funds generated from the sale, projected to be $30 million, will repay the full balance of the Museum’s $19.8 million bond debt and replenish the Museum’s endowment, which will place the Museum on a firm financial basis for the future. The process will begin immediately, and the sale will be finalized in the next six months. No works of art acquired through gift or bequest will be part of the sale.
“After detailed analysis, heavy scrutiny and the exhaustion of every reasonable alternative to relieve our bond debt, the Trustees had two agonizing choices in front of them—to either sell works of art, or to close our doors,” said Mike Miller, Chief Executive Officer at the Delaware Art Museum. “While today’s decision is certainly hard to bear, the closure of this 100-year-old museum would be, by comparison, unbearable.”
The Trustees pursued all reasonable options, such as refinancing the bond debt, fundraising and regional alliances. Refinancing strategies included using investment banks to explore public and private alternatives. The Trustees also sought the guidance of the Association of Art Museum Directors (AAMD) and the American Alliance of Museums (AAM). Despite this lengthy process, no options to relieve the Museum’s debt proved viable, forcing the Trustees to consider the last resort of selling works from the collection.
The Museum’s debt stems from the renovation and expansion of its historic Kentmere Parkway building. Tax-exempt bonds were issued in 2003 and nominally due in a lump sum in 2037. New, restrictive banking regulations, which were spawned by the 2008 financial crisis, resulted in tightened credit standards, which caused the Museum to default on performance covenants and effectively accelerated the repayment terms on the bonds. Simultaneously, the Museum experienced a significant decline to its endowment as a result of stock market performance, forcing the Trustees to enact significant budget cuts, including staff layoffs and funding cuts for exhibitions.
“This decision was made with heavy hearts, but clear minds,” said Elva Ferrari-Graham, President of the Museum’s Board of Trustees. “While the Trustees fully understand and respect museum best practices, we couldn’t bear voting to close our beloved Delaware Art Museum — a local treasure with a century-long legacy of uniting our community and cultivating a deep connection to art. This decision today will help us achieve financial stability and allow us to channel all of our collective energy back into our tradition of being a cherished community resource. Our unique collections provide educational opportunities, access to art for all ages and the chance to experience learning and creativity. In addition, the Museum fosters innovation, drives economic development and tourism and adds to the quality of life in our region. The Trustees and staff will work tirelessly in 2014 to support our new educational initiatives, our thriving Studio Art program, our new Membership program and the exciting exhibition schedule.”
