TABLE OF CONTENTS History of Judge MAGAZINE
The Judge, a weekly satirical magazine was established in 1881 by a number of artists who seceded from the staff of the popular weekly Puck Magazine. Founders included James Albert Wales, a cartoonist, Frank Tousey, publisher of dime novels, and George H. Jessop, an author. The first edition of the sixteen-page quarto appeared on October 29, 1881. After a strong start, the magazine found itself struggling to compete with its very similar rival Puck. William J. Arkell purchased the magazine in the middle 1880s. Arkell used his considerable wealth to persuade Eugene Zimmerman and Bernard Gillam to leave Puck. A supporter of the Republican Party, Arkell persuaded his cartoonists to attack the Democratic administration of Grover Cleveland. With G.O.P. aid, Judge boomed during the '80s and '90s, surpassing its rival publication in content and circulation. By the early 1890s, the circulation of the magazine reached 50,000. Under the editorial leadership of Isaac Gregory, Judge allied with the Republican Party and supported the candidacy of William McKinley largely through the cartoons of leading cartoonist Grant Hamilton. Circulation for Judge was about 85,000 in the 1890s. In the early 1900s Art Young, Richard Outcault and James Montgomery Flagg
all became regular contributors to Judge. Circulation continued
to grow and by 1912 reached 100,000 and had overtaken its main rival,
Puck. The Depression had a bad impact on sales. The price was reduced
to ten cents but when that did not solve the problem and in 1932 it became
a monthly. Judge continued to thrive into the 1930's and beyond.
The Judge Magazine Collection consists of illustrations spanning the 1880s through the early 1900s, including front covers, internal, and centerfold illustrations. Ths collection also includes 14 complete issues of Judge Magazine.
